To mark its 30th anniversary, Parmigiani Fleurier is staging 'Mechanical Wonders' at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT's Gallery 3 in Tokyo from September 19 to 24, 2026. The exhibition pairs contemporary creations by the Maison with a selection of historic mechanical masterpieces from the Maurice Sandoz Collection — pocket watches, automata and chiming mechanisms from the early 19th century — on view in Japan for the first time. The objects are preserved by the Fondation Edouard et Maurice Sandoz and were restored by Michel Parmigiani himself, whose career began in the restoration of exceptional historic timepieces before he founded the Maison in 1996. The show argues that restoration is not separate from creation but its foundation: a discipline of understanding an object's intention before innovating upon it. The presentation traces three centuries of the mechanical arts, treating historical automata not as curiosities but as expressions of a continuing culture of mechanical imagination.
