21_21 Design Sight builds tiny dwellings from a 13th-century hermit's essay on impermanence
Tokyo's 21_21 Design Sight, directed by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, is showing "Learning from 'Hojoki': Tiny Architecture Reweaves Life", in which designers reinterpret the 10-foot-square hut of the 13th-century hermit Kamo no Chomei. The show runs until 11 January 2027.
Eight centuries after a hermit withdrew to a ten-foot-square hut in the Kyoto mountains, his essay has become the blueprint for an exhibition at 21_21 Design Sight in Roppongi. "Learning from 'Hojoki': Tiny Architecture Reweaves Life", directed by Atelier Bow Wow co-founder Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, takes Kamo no Chomei's 13th-century work "Hojoki" as a lens for examining the essence of architecture. The show remains open until 11 January 2027.
Chomei's nonfiction essay describes the political and environmental turmoil that drove him to seclusion in Hino, and his meditations on living in an impermanent world have long inspired readers beyond literature. For this exhibition, designers, builders, artists and architects were invited to create their own interpretations of his tiny dwelling, drawing on their personal tools, materials and perspectives on contemporary life.
The results treat smallness as a serious proposition. Yusuke Obuchi and Jun Nakamura refashioned an abandoned feed silo into what the show calls "walking architecture", while Yusuke Omuro and Kawacho-Gumi produced a storage shed inspired by the writings of the late novelist Chotaro Kawasaki. The architecture and design studio 2m26 contributes a piece titled "living with". Each miniature dwelling is framed as an exploration of society and architecture under the pressures of contemporary life.
Tsukamoto's argument is that the dilemmas and anxieties of the present demand nothing less than a fundamental rethinking of accustomed lifestyles. Opening in late August, the show now reaches international design audiences as one of Tokyo's autumn highlights, testing whether an eight-hundred-year-old hut can still instruct a world of oversized everything.
