The 14th consecutive London edition of 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair takes place across Frieze Week at Somerset House, introducing a spotlight devoted to Modernist artists from Africa and its diaspora — the fair's most significant evolution to date. The Modernist strand runs through curated booth presentations and a dedicated 1-54 Presents exhibition, West Wind, curated by South African-Portuguese art historian Dr. Nancy Dantas, responding to a wider surge of institutional attention toward African Modernism. Long-standing participant Loeve&Co brings Aubrey Williams, Twins Seven Seven, Guido Llinàs, Frédérique Devaux Yahi and Roland Dorcély, while The Gallery of Everything presents a solo tribute to Senegalese sculptor Seyni Awa Camara and ArtTalks | Kanafani shows Egyptian Modernists Tahia Halim, Inji Efflatoun, Zeinab Al-Saginy, Rabab Nemr and Gazbia Sirry. Several booths are built entirely around women artists, including GALLERY BRULHART, Gillian Jason Gallery, O'DA Art and Galleria Anna Marra. The fair's strong solo-presentation showing includes Larissa de Souza (albertz benda), Ekene Emeka-Maduka (Fabienne Levy) and Kimathi Mafafo (Kristin Hjellegjerde), while special projects feature Nando's and Spier Arts Trust, Borderlands Art's barkcloth installation linking Uganda and Ghana, and the Midunu Institute's cocoa-focused installation Commodity / Couture.
